ABOUT
PROJECT ALAIYATHI

BACKGROUND.

The waterways stretching from the Ennore Creek to beyond the Pulicat lake was once covered in thick mangrove forests. Centuries of destruction starting from the activities of the Dutch East India company, to spreading urbanization and industrial expansion has reduced these forests to sporadic patches. Project Alaiyathi aims to restore these once abundant mangrove forests, allowing for the revival of its rich biodiversity and sustainability of the livelihoods of the 2000 families that depend exclusively on these mangrove ecosystems. The restoration work will be spearheaded by and maintained under the stewardship of the local marginalized (ST/SC/MBC) community.

The documentary below (Solastalgia) captures the history of this region, its current state, the pressures it faces and most importantly its possibilities.
